The Fortress

Hard to finish off: you win on their clock, and at least one game in ten of yours ends level.

Movement I

How the Fortress wins

P
Speed
Ponderer

Most of your games are rapid or slower. Fast chess is the minority of your record.

You give positions real thought. Calculation over reflex, fewer pieces given away in haste. Your wins tend to be earned on the board rather than snatched from the scramble.

G
Win condition
Grinder

Forty percent or more of your wins arrive on time: the opponent flags.

You outlast people. You keep the game alive, keep the position defensible, keep moving, and let the clock do the executing.

D
Bloodlust
Drawmaster

One game in ten or more ends in a draw.

You are hard to beat. Solid structures, no unnecessary risk. When the position offers nothing, you take the half point instead of inventing something that isn’t there.

Z
Nerve
Zen

Nothing in your record proves a slump after a loss: either the gap is under ten points, or there aren’t enough games either side of it to call.

Every game gets played on its own merits, as far as the record can tell. No proven slump means no reason to cut a session short on the last result alone.

Movement II

How to beat them

For the player across the board. Four laws, one per letter, each aimed at what the Fortress’s record actually measures.

  1. 1
Bill them for every think. vs Ponderer

Their game runs on time, and time is finite. Keep the position sharp and the decisions concrete. Every good move gets expensive, and the well runs dry by move 35.

  2. 2
    Don’t drift. vs Grinder

Their win condition is your clock: four in ten of their wins arrive on the flag. Trade long maneuvering for forcing lines, and their main weapon never loads.

  3. 3
Keep the half point out of reach. vs Drawmaster

Their record banks draws from quiet positions. Symmetry and mass trades play their game. Keep pieces on, keep the imbalance, make them win it or lose it.

  4. 4
Bring chess, not psychology. vs Zen

Nothing in their record says the game after a loss is played at a discount. Mind games are a wasted tempo on a hunch; win it on the other three letters.

Movement III

How to not get beaten

For the Fortress themselves. Every pole has a price. These are the characteristic risks of the style; your own report shows which ones you’re actually paying for.

  1. 1
    Budget the long think. Ponderer

A think spent at move 12 is a scramble bought at move 35. Decide what the position deserves before you sink into it.

  2. 2
Never let the flag be your only plan. Grinder

Against clock-managers the position must stand on its own. Win on the board first. Treat the flag as a bonus, never as the plan.

  3. 3
Don’t offer peace to the beatable. Drawmaster

Draws against players you outplay are rating left on the table. Cap the risk in bad positions and leave the good ones alone.

  4. 4
Don’t barricade a door nothing has forced. Zen

No proven drop in the game after a loss. A thin record hides one easily, though, so this is the letter to re-read as your game count grows. If rating is escaping now, it’s through the other three.
