Sicilian Defense: Najdorf Variation

10/10
1.e4c52.Nf3d63.d4cxd44.Nxd4Nf65.Nc3a6

The most famous and battle-tested Sicilian, favoured by Fischer and Kasparov. The flexible ...a6 prepares queenside expansion and controls b5. It gives Black rich, dynamic play in unbalanced positions.

Key ideas
  • Play ...a6 to control b5 and prepare ...e5 or ...e6 setups
  • Expand on the queenside with ...b5 and press White's centre
  • Meet 6.Bg5 and the English Attack (Be3, f3, g4) through concrete counterplay
  • Create dynamic imbalance and launch counterattacks rather than defend passively

No reply to 1.e4 is played more. Fischer made the Najdorf his main weapon, and Kasparov's Sicilians are pillars of chess history — the Scheveningen against Karpov, the Dragon he unveiled against Anand in 1995. When you play 1...c5 you refuse symmetry, the same refusal that carried two world champions.
